None of what follows requires new hardware โ these are all settings changes that reduce background overhead, prioritize your games for system resources, and clear out the little things that quietly eat into frame rate over time.
1.Turn on Game Mode
Settings > Gaming > Game Mode > On. Windows deprioritizes background tasks and driver-related notifications while a game is in focus, reducing stutter from unrelated background activity.
2.Set your GPU preference per game
Settings > System > Display > Graphics, click "Browse" and select your game's .exe, then set its Graphics preference to "High performance."
This forces laptops and hybrid-GPU systems to use the dedicated GPU for that game instead of accidentally falling back to integrated graphics.
3.Trim the Xbox Game Bar overlay
Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar โ if you don't record or stream, turn off "Record game clips, screenshots, and broadcast using Game Bar" under Captures. Background recording quietly consumes CPU and GPU headroom even when you're not actively using it.
4.Update GPU drivers directly from the vendor
Grab the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel directly rather than relying only on Windows Update โ GPU vendors ship game-specific optimization profiles and fixes far more frequently than Windows Update pushes them.
5.Trim startup programs
Task Manager > Startup apps tab โ disable anything you don't need running in the background at boot. Fewer background processes means more RAM and CPU headroom available once you launch a game.
6.Set your power plan to High Performance
Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode (or the classic Control Panel > Power Options on older builds) โ set it to Best Performance / High Performance so Windows doesn't throttle the CPU to save power mid-game.
7.Disable unnecessary visual effects
Search "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows," and choose "Adjust for best performance," or manually keep just the effects you care about. This frees a small but real amount of GPU overhead, most noticeable on lower-end hardware.
