Microsoft's official minimum for Windows 11 is 4GB RAM and 64GB storage β but "boots and runs" and "runs comfortably" are very different bars, and the gap between them matters for anyone buying or upgrading hardware.
RAM: Minimum vs Realistic
4GB is Microsoft's stated floor, but modern browsers with multiple tabs, background apps, and Windows itself will feel constrained at that level. 8GB is a much more realistic baseline for smooth everyday use, and 16GB is worth it if you multitask heavily, edit media, or run virtual machines.
Storage: Minimum vs Realistic
64GB technically meets the install requirement, but leaves very little room after Windows updates, installed apps, and personal files accumulate. 256GB is a comfortable practical minimum for most users; 512GB+ if you install games or work with large media files.
SSD vs HDD
This matters more than the exact capacity number. An SSD (even a smaller one) makes Windows 11 feel dramatically faster to boot and load apps than a larger traditional hard drive β prioritize SSD storage over raw capacity if you're choosing between the two.
