How to Install Office on a Windows PC Using Your Microsoft Account

Updated Aug 2026 5 min read

Modern Office product keys are redeemed online rather than typed directly into an installer, and get tied to a Microsoft account in the process β€” which also means you can reinstall Office on a replacement PC later without needing the key a second time.

Before You Start

  • A genuine Office product key (25 characters)
  • A Microsoft account β€” existing, or a few minutes to create one for free
  • A stable internet connection for the download (Office is a multi-gigabyte install)
  • Enough free disk space β€” at least 4GB recommended

1.Go to the Office setup page

Visit office.com/setup (for one-time-purchase editions like Office 2024) or microsoft365.com/setup (for Microsoft 365 subscriptions), and sign in with an existing Microsoft account, or create a free one if you don't have one yet.

2.Redeem your product key

Enter the 25-character key exactly as it appears in your order email, then click Next.

Redemption ties the license to whichever Microsoft account you're signed in with β€” double-check you're using the account you intend to keep using long-term.

3.Download Office

Once the key is redeemed, click "Install Office" to download the installer, then open the downloaded file to launch setup.

4.Let setup run

The installer downloads and installs all the core Office apps automatically β€” Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and others depending on your specific edition. This typically takes 10–20 minutes depending on your connection.

5.Sign in and activate

Open any Office app (Word is the easiest to check) and sign in with the same Microsoft account when prompted. This activates the entire suite at once β€” you won't need to sign in separately for each app.

Confirm activation

In any Office app, go to File > Account. It should show "Product Activated" under Product Information, along with the account it's licensed to.
