How to Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro Using an OEM Key

Updated Mar 2026 4 min read

If the command line isn't your thing, the Settings app offers exactly the same Home-to-Pro upgrade through a guided, entirely graphical flow β€” same end result as the SLMGR method, just click-through instead of typed commands.

Before You Start

  • A PC currently running Windows 10 Home
  • A genuine Windows 10 Pro OEM key
  • An internet connection

1.Open Activation settings

Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

2.Start the edition upgrade

Under "Upgrade your edition of Windows," select "Change product key" (the exact wording varies slightly by build) rather than "Go to Store," since you already have a key to enter.

3.Enter your Pro key

Type in the 25-character OEM Pro key exactly as provided in your order email, then click Next.

4.Let Windows finish upgrading

The PC applies the edition change and prompts for a restart. Files, apps, and settings remain untouched throughout.

5.Restart to complete the switch

Restart when prompted β€” the edition change fully applies only after this reboot.

Confirm you're now on Pro

Settings > System > About should show "Edition: Windows 10 Pro" after the restart, and Activation should show as activated with the new key.

"Change product key" option is missingSome builds label this differently or bury it under "Go to Store" first.Select "Go to Store," then look for a "I want to enter a product key instead" link on the following screen.
